Why Capital Punishment Should Not Remain As A Punishment...

Debate on Death Row The other day the Capital Hill Gang hosted a debate discussing the reasons why Capital Punishment should or should not remain as a punishment for prisoners. The following will present the main ideas expressed for and against Capital Punishment although slightly summarized. Lastly I will be closing with a few questions presented by the audience followed by their final statements and my personal remarks. One of the first issues that are always brought up concerning the death penalty is its morality. Those for the death penalty, they addressed the fact that the opposition would suggest that the death penalty is inherently immoral because no one or one government should take someone’s life. Throughout history scientist have worked on improving methods of execution to be more humane nevertheless despite chargers of cruel and unusual punishment the Court has continuously rejected challenge. Statistics so far has shown that the death penalty has deterred murder, if it is one thing people fear more than anything is death. Statistics show that in towns where capital punishment is enforced there is a decrease in crime rates such as rape and murder. They offer that the justification for capital punishment is that the deserved punishment of those that commit heinous crimes provides just retribution, not revenge, which is supported by a different motive. The families of the victims argue that it is unfair that while their loved one had to die unjustly that their killer goes on to live out the rest of their days; even if it is in a jail cell. But what does one do about the irrevocable mistakes of people who were mistried and midsentence to death. As with all forms of justice noth ing is 100% correct all of the time, the judges, jurors and lawyers are all humans and they make mistakes. However the opposition views the death penalty as severe and unusual punishment due to the amount of pain suffered and the way people are executed. There have been cases where
